Evstafievs Malerei zeichnet sich durch eine besondere Spannung zwischen Emotionalität und materieller Präsenz aus. In kräftigem, oft pastosem Farbauftrag, durchzogen von charakteristischen „Linien des Lebens“, entstehen Bilder von starker Ausstrahlung. Sie bewegen sich zwischen Abstraktion und Andeutung: Mal erinnern sie an urbane Räume oder Landschaften, mal entfalten sie rein flächenhafte, vibrierende Strukturen. Immer aber laden sie zur persönlichen Interpretation ein und wecken Erinnerungen und Assoziationen.
Mikhail Evstafiev ist ein international tätiger Künstler mit breitem Hintergrund: Er ist Fotograf, Journalist, Filmemacher, Schriftsteller und Maler. Seine Werke spiegeln seine vielseitige Biografie ebenso wie eine klare künstlerische Handschrift.

Leonardo da Vinci said that “Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen. A painter should begin every canvas with a wash of black, because all things in nature are dark except where exposed by the light.”
There is no reason to write if you have nothing original to say. There is no reason to paint unless you see differently.
Art holds the ultimate power of disclosure. A painting is NOT simply a mirror that captures appearances. It must attempt to reveal at least a fraction of the internal truth of the subject matter.
I paint from the inside, mixing the imaginative with memory. I exaggerate, amplify and bend reality until intuition tells me I have said enough. The scratches that you see are hidden notes, energy and passion stored within the layers.
Paintings are reminiscent of the past, the way we think we preserved yesterday in our minds. However, our memories are never exact copies of the past. We easily get things wrong, we forget, exaggerate, misjudge, and lose sight of the crucial details.
I don’t try to capture direct likeness. My works are triggered by feelings, which means they are a subjective interpretation of the past.
An artist must be fearless and determined. Yet there is always room for doubt.
If a painter is unsatisfied with his work it means he has some talent. Mediocre artists are usually pleased with what they accomplish.
If you don’t get it right the first time, put the work aside, and come back later to revisit the feelings that invigorated you in the first place. And if you are not happy start over again…
